MARS LUREN

ASHEVILLE, NC

I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon, and haven't stopped since. When I was younger, drawing was often a way for me to zone out and escape. During my two years at art school one of the most valuable things I learned was how to see in order to draw from life. In 2016 I decided to dive into that practice and began bringing a small sketchbook with me everywhere. This turned what had once been my escape mechanism into a way to ground more fully into the present; To really look at my environment and plug into my surroundings. Drawing from life has become one of my favorite practices; a kind of zen meditation, connecting my senses and concentrating my focus.

I have worked as a tattoo artist since 2008, and love taking classes whenever I can to expand my skill set as a visual artist. I've taken courses in background illustration, oil and gouache painting, portraiture, and pottery (with local Meg Potts!). With every class I expand my capacity to use visual art as a medium for communication.

I have a lot of art related ambitions, but most of all, I'm so grateful to have the vast plane of visual media to play around with and externalize experience. If I had to condense my goals down to one, I would say that I aim to communicate what I see. With my life drawings, it's pretty direct, and with my illustrative work I hope to show the internalized planes that I know we all share, but are harder to express. I hope my work can offer others whatever they need in that moment, or maybe - an anchor or visual trigger to access some understanding within themselves.
